Art History and Culture in the Vicinity of Kiens/Chienes

The vicinity of Kiens/Chienes can look back on a long and colorful past. Today, you are free to trace the paths of previous generations of travelers who appreciated the unique beauty of this region.

Thus, the Ehrenburg/Casteldarne Milestone indicates the presence of Romans, dates back to A.D. 201, and states – besides other information – that the distance to the settlement of "Aguntum," one of the most-famous Roman settlements in the Austrian city of Lienz.
The Ehrenburg/Casteldarne Castle, ancestral residence of the lords of Ehrenburg, dates back to the 12th Century. Today, it is a wonderful example of Baroque architecture. With regards to art history, the parish churches of St. Peter and Paul in Kiens/Chienes, St. Martin in Hofern/Corti, the provost church in Ehrenburg/Casteldarne, and the fortress of Schöneck, where the famed Oswald von Wolkenstein was allegedly born.


The Spruce Oil Distillery and the Herbal Garden

Between Kiens/Chienes and Issing/Issengo, you can observe special craftsmen performing their traditional work. In the spruce oil distillery, valuable essential oils, crèmes, and herbal products have been produced from wild spruce trees growing high in the mountains since 1912. In the herbal garden, rare and interesting spices, herbs, and therapeutic plants are organically grown. The herbal extracts and volatile substances contained in the pure essential oils, crèmes, and ointments have a pleasant and salubrious effect.
